Common questions when getting started:
If I'm training with women, will my Jiu Jitsu/self defense be effective in a real situation?
Many women avoid training because they experience discomfort drilling close contact movement with men. Training with other women is very effective in learning and practicing the art in a way that may remove some of that initial discomfort and risk of injury. Longer term, it is especially good for those who want to compete or enjoy training predominantly with other women. Ultimately, training is effective in a real situation to the extent that training is consistent enough to be able to use skills in a stressful situation. Once you are ready, train at co-ed classes as your schedule permits.
Do I have to be in shape to do Jiu Jitsu?
No, you need to be willing to show up and move and learn. Jiu Jitsu will help you maintain or increase your fitness and flexibility. Many people report weight loss, stress relief, and a different level of confidence and well being. If you can do yoga, you can do Jiu Jitsu. If you like to learn, you can do Jiu Jitsu. If you are overcoming a prior assault, Jiu Jitsu can help your recovery. If you struggle with anxiety, Jiu Jitsu can help you re-wire your nervous system. Just start training, wherever you are.
What is Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) looks like wrestling or what you might see watching a UFC event once it goes to the ground. BJJ is a system of combat that focuses on takedowns, positional control, escapes, and submissions. Much of the training takes place on the ground, no striking (punches, kicks, etc.) is allowed but we review how to handle strikes. Submissions include chokes and joint locks. We "tap" to training partners to stop the action. Your training partner will let you go immediately. BJJ is especially effective for rehearsing self defense techniques for assault situations most likely to occur. We will review techniques that are specifically effective for self defense vs. sport jiu jitsu in both women’s classes and especially in the basics classes. These classes are open to those 13 yo and up.
What do I wear to Jiu Jitsu classes?
The Gi (uniform) is worn for some classes and No Gi attire (rashguard aka long sleeved fitted compression shirt and pants that cover your knees, a.k.a. yoga pants) for others. Both are beneficial for self defense purposes. Remove jewelry and trim finger and toe nails. Removing make-up can be part of considerate hygiene, smearing it on someone else's clothes could be unpleasant. Be clean and considerate.
